Dream - Although being colonized by the Netherlands for 350 years, Indonesia did not sever diplomatic relations with the Windmill country. After 25 years of independence, Soeharto became the first President to set foot in the Netherlands and strengthen the Indonesia-Netherlands relationship.
In a post on the Instagram account @arsip_indonesia, it can be seen that President Soeharto visited the Netherlands on September 3, 1970, accompanied by a delegation and his wife, Tien Soeharto.
The visit of Soeharto was well received by Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard as the leaders of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
"Even Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard personally came down to the Ijpernberg military airport to welcome Soeharto and his wife."
Soeharto and his entourage departed for the Netherlands using the DC 8 aircraft "Pulau Bali" from Garuda Indonesia.
Upon arriving in the Netherlands, Soeharto was immediately warmly welcomed by Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard as well as other palace officials. Soeharto and his entourage were directed to go straight to Huis Ten Bosch Palace.
With a black suit and peci, Soeharto appears to walk gallantly and dignified beside Queen Juliana. The First Lady, Tien Soeharto, also looks graceful and beautiful wearing a kebaya and selendang.
The arrival of Soeharto not only brought happiness to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The people also enthusiastically welcomed Soeharto by waiting on the road that would be passed by the convoy of the 2nd President of Indonesia.
However, due to the hostage-taking of the Indonesian Ambassador, Taswin Almalik, at his house located in The Hague by Ambonese youth from the Republic of South Maluku (RMS) who were in the midst of a tremor of rebellion, Soeharto and his entourage had to board a helicopter to go to the palace.
The incident caused Soeharto to fail to meet with the Dutch community who were waiting for him. In fact, his visit was at risk of being canceled because the hostage-taking youth threatened to kill important individuals who were being held hostage.
However, the threat did not make Soeharto tremble. He continued his visit with an escort from the Dutch side.
Upon arriving at the palace, the first agenda that Soeharto carried out was having lunch together with the royal party. After that, Soeharto, along with Adam Malik who was serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time, and Widjojo Nitisastro as the Head of Bappenas, conducted diplomacy with Queen Juliana.
On the last day of Soeharto in the Netherlands, Queen Juliana handed over the Nagarakertagama manuscript made by Empu Prapanca in the 14th century. The historical object was obtained by the Netherlands in Lombok and kept in Leiden for many years.
In the handover, Soeharto appeared gallant wearing a black outfit like the typical attire of the Dutch royal family, but still with a touch of a black cap and traditional Indonesian woven fabric called songket. Meanwhile, his wife Tien Soeharto maintained her Indonesian woman style by wearing a kebaya along with her hair in a bun.
Not only the lives of artists, the childhood portraits of political figures in Indonesia are always interesting to observe.
