Dream - The intention of fasting in Ramadan is an important matter that should not be missed when intending to perform the obligatory fast. This intention determines the validity of the fasting worship that Dream friends do. This intention is usually recited together after performing congregational tarawih prayers at the mosque or can also be recited alone. However, have Dream friends ever wondered about the origin of the intention to fast in Ramadan? This history may not be widely known by the Muslim community.
However, when you know it, God willing, it will give you stronger conviction and of course there are lessons that you can learn. Well, here is the origin of the intention of fasting in Ramadan as summarized by Dream through various sources.
The importance of intention in fasting Ramadan cannot be underestimated. Intention is the primary factor that determines the validity of a fasting worship.
"Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has emphasized the importance of intention in fasting during Ramadan through his hadiths. When fasting, a Muslim must have a sincere intention to perform the act of fasting. This intention must be specific to fasting during Ramadan and should be made before sunrise, before the start of the pre-dawn meal time (imsak). In a hadith, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: 'One's fast is not valid if they do not have the intention before dawn.'"
This shows that the intention to fast must be established before the start of fasting time in order for it to be an accepted worship in the presence of Allah SWT. Intention becomes important because it serves as an indicator of the seriousness and devotion of a Muslim in worship. With intention, a person realizes the purpose of Ramadan fasting, which is to draw closer to Allah SWT, cleanse oneself from sins, and increase faith and piety.
The origin and intention of fasting in Ramadan are explained by the Shafi'i school.
In this madzhab, it is taught that intention is not only intending to do something (qashdul fi'il), but it must also be accompanied by a specific type of worship (ta'yin), along with the clarity of its obligation if the worship is indeed obligatory. Now, here is the arrangement of the intention for fasting in Ramadan by the Shafi'i scholars as written by Imam An-Nawawi: <صِفَةُ النِّيَّةِ الْكَامِلَةِ الْمُجَزِّئَةِ بِلَا خَلَافٍ أَنْ يَقْصِدَ بِقَلْبِهِ صَوْمَ غَدٍ عَنْ أَدَاءِ فَرْضِ رَمَضَانِ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى>
Translation: Meaning: "The perfect form of intention is to intentionally and purposefully fast tomorrow to fulfill the obligatory worship in this year's Ramadan month, for the sake of Allah ta'ala." (Imam Nawawi, al-Majmu', Riyadh, Dârul 'lamil Kutub, volume 6, page 253) Through the arrangement of the fasting intention, until now Muslims recite the following Ramadan fasting intention, especially for the followers of Imam Shafi'i: نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ غَدٍ عَنْ أَدَاءِ فَرْضٍ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى Meaning: "I intentionally fast tomorrow to fulfill the obligatory worship in this year's Ramadan month for the sake of Allah ta'ala."
