"The Timna Valley, located in the desert of Israel and further south of Qumran, has been the focus of archaeological excavations since 1964."
Interesting findings include a network of mines believed to have been built by the slaves of King Solomon, as revealed in the documentary "Secrets: King Solomon's Mines" from the Smithsonian Channel. In the documentary, it is stated that archaeologists may have identified the source of King Solomon's wealth.
"Professor Erez Ben-Yosef from Tel Aviv University stated that production at the site developed 3,000 years ago, during the reign of King Solomon."
In the Plos One article, a group of researchers led by Professor Erez Ben-Yosef and Professor Tom Levy revealed a vast mining network undergoing changes.
Hundreds of slag fragments and remnants of a 500-year-old copper smelting process were examined by archaeologists. The majority of the samples came from a mining complex in southern Israel, which may be the site of the famous King Solomon's Mines, and Faynan in northern Timna in the Arava Valley, Jordan.
"During the period from the 13th to the 10th century BC, researchers noted continuous technological developments in smelting skills and improvements in method efficiency."
