This young okapi is the 18th born at the Cincinnati Zoo since 1989. Although the zoo estimates around 15,000 okapis worldwide, their population is threatened by habitat destruction and poaching. As a native animal of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a close relative of the giraffe, okapis are listed as an endangered species in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species.
