Dream - Soeharto must end his presidency in 1998. His 32-year reign finally crumbled due to the pressure from the community and students to carry out reform.
Uncontrolled riots made Soeharto choose to step down from his position. Losing his status as president forced him to immediately leave the state palace at that time.
In the post of TikTok account @soehartois, the moment Soeharto left Istana Merdeka after handing over his position to B.J. Habibie, who was inaugurated as the president, was recorded.
With his short black shirt and his characteristic peci, Soeharto walked towards the front of the palace with a smile and paid respect before entering the civilian-plated Sedan Mercedes car that would take him to his personal residence in Cendana, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
Other officials also escorted Soeharto to the front of the palace.
Soeharto at that time was not alone. He was accompanied by his first daughter, namely Siti Hardianti Rukmana, who is usually called Mbak Tutut.
The moment Soeharto left the palace was quite emotional. Especially when Soeharto received respect from the paspampres (presidential security forces) when leaving the Istana Merdeka area.
The departure of Soeharto from Istana Merdeka was accompanied by a number of soldiers with two cars.
Although asked to step down, regardless of all accusations against him, it cannot be denied that Soeharto is one of the presidents who contributed to maintaining the stability of the country, so he deserves to be respected.
Not long after, B.J Habibie, who had been inaugurated as the President of Indonesia, then left Istana Merdeka after taking his oath of office. This portrait was captured through an old video uploaded by the Tiktok account @albiansyah_dox.
The 3rd President of Indonesia boarded the Presidential vehicle using a gray suit and a black peci to return to his residence in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
