Dream - Idul Adha is celebrated every 10th of Dzhulhijjah. This moment holds a deep meaning for Muslims. Besides performing the Eid prayer in the morning and followed by sacrificing animals, behind this celebration lies a very touching story. It is the story of Prophet Ibrahim (as) who received a command from Allah SWT to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismail (as). Until now, we know this significant day as Idul Adha. However, do you know the meaning of the term Idul Adha, my dear Dream friends?
"Even some people call it the day of sacrifice or hajj celebration. That term is not wrong, because in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, it is a moment where Muslims perform the sacrifice and carry out the hajj pilgrimage in the Holy Land of Mecca. Here is the meaning of the word Eid al-Adha as summarized by Dream through various sources."
The implementation of the Eid al-Adha celebration on the 10th of Dzulhijjah does not just come out of nowhere. However, it is through a very significant event.
According to Islamic history, it is narrated that Prophet Ibrahim (as) had a dream in which he was commanded by Allah SWT to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismail (as), on the 8th of Dzulhijjah. Behind this command, Prophet Ibrahim (as) and his wife were very eager for the presence of a child at that time. Eventually, Prophet Ismail (as) was born into this world. Since he had received this command, Prophet Ibrahim (as) conveyed it to Prophet Ismail (as). Both the father and the son were very obedient to Allah SWT.
So, Prophet Ismail as did not hesitate to ask his father to sacrifice him because it was the command of Allah SWT. Thanks to the patience and sincerity of the father and son, Allah SWT replaced Prophet Ismail as with a sheep. Until now, all Muslims commemorate the feast of Eid al-Adha by sacrificing animals, such as cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and camels.
Quoted from the website of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia, the term Idul Adha is a combination of the words 'Idul' and 'Adha'. The word 'Id' comes from the Arabic word 'aada (yauudu)' which means 'to return'.
Then, the word Adha is the plural form of the word 'adhat' from the word 'udhiyah' which means 'sacrifice'. So, Idul Adha means 'returning to sacrifice' or the feast of animal sacrifice. The word sacrifice comes from the Arabic word 'qurban' which means 'offering to Allah as an act of obedience and means of closeness, the slaughter of livestock as an act of obedience to Allah'. Then it comes from the word 'qaruba' which means 'family, approaching, or as an offering, gift, or offering to God'.
Apart from Idul Adha, there are some people who refer to it as "lebaran haji". Why?
The reason for this is because the celebration of Eid al-Adha coincides with the moment of performing the Hajj pilgrimage in the Holy Land of Mecca. According to the Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language (KBBI), Eid al-Adha is a religious holiday accompanied by the sacrifice of animals (such as cows, goats) for those who are able, on the 10th-13th of Dhu al-Hijjah. Meanwhile, according to the website of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenag RI), Eid al-Adha is the implementation of the Hajj pilgrimage in the Holy Land (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) which coincides with the commemoration of Eid al-Adha.
