Dream - Women in Gaza, Palestine are looking for ways to survive during the war with Israel. In addition to food supplies, they also face a scarcity of sanitary pads or other menstrual products.
Reported by ActionAid, women in Gaza are forced to use unhygienic methods to meet their sanitary pad needs during menstruation.
The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) heard that several refugee women living in Rafah were cutting their tent fabric into small pieces. This action is considered to increase the risk of infection. Another danger is that the tents they occupy to protect themselves from the cold and rain are no longer intact because they are constantly torn apart.
The situation is becoming more and more distressing because the residents are also lacking clean water sources. The effort to maintain personal hygiene is considered almost impossible. A number of women in Gaza even admitted that they have not taken a bath for weeks.
"There is no water. I suffer during menstruation. There is no clean water available to clean myself during menstruation. I also don't have the sanitary pads that I need during menstruation," said one NGO staff member. The situation is even more distressing considering that Rafah is currently inhabited by over one million Gaza refugees, four times more than the normal population."
In that chaotic situation, there is no privacy. The queue of residents for the toilet is very long. UNRWA estimates that the ratio of toilets to the number of refugees there is 1 toilet for every 486 people.
Without clean water, women who are menstruating cannot clean themselves and remain hygienic. Many women are forced to use used sanitary pads or other substitutes for longer than recommended, which has endangered their health.
"Imagine having to face menstruation without menstrual products, toilet paper, or soap, and having no opportunity to clean oneself – while living alongside others without any privacy," said Riham Jafari, Advocacy and Communication Coordinator at ActionAid Palestine.
