In the Congo, there is the darkest river in the world that hardly has any shadows in its water. Here are the facts.
In scientific research, scientists have uncovered a new natural wonder, namely the Ruki River, a tributary of the Congo River, which has recently been dubbed as the darkest river in the world. By combining advanced technology and extraordinary efforts, they have discovered this amazing natural phenomenon. A river that is the darkest, almost without shadows. How can this happen? To satisfy your curiosity, let's read the following article!
As the first scientific study conducted on the African river, scientists concluded that the dark-colored river water is caused by the high level of dissolved organic matter from the surrounding rainforest. The scientists found that the color is caused by carbon-rich compounds dissolved from decaying plant matter and carried to the Ruki River by rainwater and floods.
Dr. Travis Drake, the lead author of the study, said that the Ruki River is a place where carbon-rich plant material is submerged. As a result, the color of the water makes the Ruki River darker than the Rio Negro River. "The organic matter derived from this vegetation absorbs light, so the higher the concentration, the darker the water appears," said Dr. Drake. "This river water is like a very strong brewed tea using a lot of tea bags."
By using a measurement system, the scientists team from ETH Zurich in Switzerland found that the Ruki River is 1.5 times darker than the Rio Negro River in the Amazon, which is the largest blackwater river in the world. "We are impressed by the color of the river," said ETH Zurich researcher Travis Drake, adding that the river is so dark that you cannot directly see the reflection of a face in the water.
