Dream - The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia that is most similar to Indonesia. It's no wonder that when visiting the Philippines, it feels like being in our own country. However, there are several differences that will be unique when we visit the Pearl of the Orient Sea. As experienced by Dream.co.id together with the Philippines Familiarization Tour team on October 10-14, 2023. Not only exploring the corners of Manila, Dream.co.id and the team also visited Coron Island, which is located in the province of Palawan. Spending almost a week in the Philippines, we found many unique things that might need to be known before our Dream friends travel there.
When exiting Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila heading towards the accommodation, Sahabat Dream will encounter public transportation that may only be found in the Philippines, namely Jeepney.
Jeepney is a public transportation in the Philippines, similar to the city transportation known as angkot in Jakarta. Its unique shape and vibrant colors will catch our attention when we see it. Pau, who was our guide in Manila, explained that the transportation is called Jeepney because it comes from two words. "Jeep" because its shape resembles a jeep car but longer at the back, and "knee" because the passengers' knees will bump if they sit at the back. One trip, Jeepney can carry up to 20 local passengers or tourists from Asia. Meanwhile, Westerners usually around 10 to 15 people only.
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The way to stop a Jeepney is similar to angkot. Joan, who also accompanied us during the tour in the Philippines, mentioned that the Jeepney fare starts from 10 Peso or around Rp3 thousand, depending on the route and distance."
Not only Jeepneys, in the Philippines there are also other unique vehicles called Tricycles. If in Coron we can't find Jeeps, but we can find tricycles along the road both in Coron and Manila.
However, there are differences in shape in the two cities. Tricycles in Coron have a more uniform shape but with different colors. Meanwhile, in Manila, tricycles have a more diverse shape and size.
Besides being in the form of a motorized tricycle, Tricycles in Manila also come in the form of bajaj, similar to those in India and Jakarta but with different colors.
If you see a motorcycle without a license plate on the front when you are in the Philippines, you don't need to be surprised. Because motorcycles in the Philippines, both in Manila and Coron, only use license plates on the back of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, cars still use license plates on the front and back of the vehicle as in Indonesia.
Unlike Indonesia, vehicle traffic in the Philippines uses the right lane. Therefore, the steering wheel is located on the left side of the car, and public transportation doors such as buses are on the right side.
Not only the atmosphere is similar to our own country, it turns out that there are many words in the Philippines that have the same meaning as in Indonesia. Some of them are the words 'anak' (child), 'payung' (umbrella), 'nangka' (jackfruit), 'mata' (eye), 'bawang' (garlic), 'takut' (afraid), and expensive.
When crossing Coron City Road, we saw many students on the side of the road during school hours. It turns out that school uniforms in the Philippines are similar to those in Indonesia, with white tops and red skirts.
The difference is, in Indonesia, the color uniform is used by elementary school students, while in the Philippines, white and red are used by junior high schools.
When Dream friends visited the Philippines and went to a fried chicken fast food restaurant, almost every rice menu was accompanied by mushroom sauce or Mushroom sauce.
The mushroom sauce is used as a dip or food complement just like chili sauce in Indonesia. In fact, in some fast food restaurants, you can ask for a free refill of mushroom sauce.
