Dream - Retinol formula so far can be said to be the prima donna formula for skin care. It can come in various forms, such as cream, gel, and serum. Now, there are many skincare products that highlight the content of retinal formula in them.
Not a typo, retinol and retinal are two different formulations. Retinal is one category of retinoid, and experts say that retinal may be more effective compared to the usual retinol that we use.
"“Retinoids, in general, are considered the anti-aging superstar. They can improve overall skin texture and color as well as help even out long-term sun damage-induced discoloration," said Sarah Taylor, MD, MPH, a dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at the Wake Forest School of Medicine."
What is Retinal? Retinal, or known as retinaldehyde, is a type of retinoid. The effectiveness of retinol compared to retinal is slightly weaker. "This is related to their respective biochemical pathways starting from the synthesis, or construction of compounds, to when they integrate into the skin and undergo further biochemical conversion," said Dr. Taylor.
Like most skincare products, what is "best" for you is relative. "Although products containing retinol are more common and widely available, these products take longer to see results," says Dr. Taylor.
According to Dr. Taylor, retinal is a stronger retinoid, so the visible results will appear faster with consistent use.
The difference between retinol and retinal is often confusing because both are technically retinoids, but there are definitely differences that need to be noted.
"“Retinoic acid, or tretinoin, is the most powerful form of retinoid that can be used by the skin; however, it is only available with a doctor's prescription,” said Dr. Hadley King, MD, FAAD. Another common retinoid found in over-the-counter products is retinyl palmitate, retinol, and retinaldehyde (or "retinal"). These retinoids must go through a conversion process to transform into retinoic acid before the skin can use them. "
"So the difference between retinal and retinol basically lies in their potency and efficacy. The more steps required to be converted into retinoic acid, the weaker the retinoid," said Dr. King. So for those who can tolerate over-the-counter and stronger retinoid options, retinal is a good choice. For those with more sensitive skin, retinol or retinyl palmitate may be a more suitable choice."
There is always an adjustment period when using new skincare products, but it is important to provide extra care to the skin when using stronger ingredients such as retinoids.
"“Retinization is an adjustment period in which the skin adapts to the use of topical retinoids such as tretinoin. During this time, the skin may experience irritation, resulting in dryness, peeling, flaking, redness, or a burning or stinging sensation," said Dr. King. There are several ways to help the skin adjust to retinization better when using retinol. Start by applying a pea-sized amount to the entire face, every other night, followed by a moisturizer."
"Increase it every night if/as tolerated, or reduce the frequency if necessary," said Dr. King."
It can also apply the "sandwich technique", which is to apply moisturizer first, followed by a retinoid product, and then moisturizer again. When doing this, Dr. King recommends using a gentle retinoid formula to avoid other ingredients that may potentially cause irritation. Want to try, Dream friends? Source: Makeup.com
