"Dream - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the number of unemployed people in Indonesia has decreased to 7.20 million as of February 2024. The unemployment rate is already lower than the pre-Covid-19 pandemic period."
Quoting Liputan6.com, in February 2020 or the period before the pandemic, Indonesia's Open Unemployment Rate (TPT) reached 4.94 percent. The unemployment rate has decreased to 4.82 percent in the same period this year.
The thing that drives the decrease in unemployment rate in Indonesia is because there are more and more companies opening job vacancies. The decrease in unemployment rate is also inseparable from the consistent economic growth performance of Indonesia. The continuously growing economy creates many job opportunities.
Data BPS also stated that, during 2023, East Java became one of the provinces with the highest number of job vacancies. It is recorded that there were 51,163 job vacancies during the previous year.

"Previously, BPS 2023 recorded nearly 10 million Gen Z individuals without jobs, also known as unemployed. BPS categorizes them as 'youth not in education, employment, and training' (NEET)."
Economic observer from the Indonesia Strategic and Economic Action Institution, Ronny P Sasmita, said that the high NEET rate among Gen Z is influenced by seven main factors. Firstly, it is due to the low economic growth in Indonesia, resulting in a low absorption of new workforce, especially among Gen Z. Secondly, our Incremental Labour Output Ratio (ILOR) is also quite low. The absorption of workforce per 1 percent of growth is decreasing day by day.
Third, the character of Gen Z is no longer the same as the previous generation. Therefore, their perspective on the world of work is also different. Fourth, the government has not been too optimal in encouraging the acceleration of investment in sectors that are suitable for the character of Gen Z, such as the digital economy, creative economy, tourism, and the like. "The government is still focused on pushing conventional sectors that are considered strategic in contributing to growth," he said.
Fifth, on the other hand, the cost of education is getting more and more expensive, which also makes Gen Z less interested in exploring further levels of education. Sixth, the cost of starting a new business or becoming an entrepreneur is also not cheap, especially since Gen Z tends to be very consumptive, so on average they are not able to accumulate savings to be used as capital for a new business. "Seventh, the large number of NEETs among Gen Z proves that the pre-employment card program has failed," he concluded.
