Depo Sidotopo was built during the Dutch East Indies government. Starting on April 6, 1875, they formed Staatsspoorwegen (SS) to build a railway line project by connecting the Surabaya-Pasuruan-Malang regions.
Until 1918, they built the Sidotopo Depot to accommodate the busy train traffic. In a span of 3 years, SS transformed the area that used to be rice fields, swamps, and villages in Sidotopo into a depot area covering more than 80 hectares.

Reitsma, it is explained that the Sidotopo Locomotive Depot has been actively used since 1923. J.J.G Oegema also wrote in his book titled "STOOMTRACTIE OP JAVA EN SUMATRA" that Sidotopo Depot was the most modern main depot at that time.
Not to mention, with an area of more than 80 hectares, SS builds a locomotive depot complex along with a remise for the maintenance and repair of locomotives, including trains and carriages.
