"Not Just Changing Letters, This Is How Expensive It Is to Change the Name of India to Bharat"
News emerged stating that India will change its country name.
News emerged stating that India will change its country name.
"Dream - In the midst of his tenure as the chairman of the G20 presidency, there are speculations regarding India. This country of Bollywood actors is widely rumored to change its name. The circulating information mentions that India, currently led by PM Narendra Modi, will change its name to 'Bharat'."
This speculation arose during a special session of Parliament at the end of this month. However, changing the name of a country turns out to be more than just replacing letters. There is a significant cost that needs to be incurred for this grand plan. According to the Economic Times, several models are suggested for this change.
One of them is a model created by intellectual property lawyer and blogger based in South Africa, Darren Olivier. The Outlook news page reports that the cost of changing the name of India to Bharat will cost more than 14,000 crore rupees or around Rp25.852 trillion (1 crore rupee is equivalent to 10 million rupees). Economic Times itself has not independently verified these figures. This calculation model was previously made by Olivier in 2018 when Eswatini changed its name to Eswatini. The method is to compare the renaming of a country with rebranding exercises in large companies.
According to its model, the average marketing cost for large companies is around 6 percent of their total revenue, while rebranding costs can reach 10 percent of the overall marketing budget. India's total revenue income itself reached Rs23.84 lakh crore in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2023.
Referring to the Olivier model, India must at least spend Rs14,034 crore, larger than its government budget for the food security program every month. Some Indian leaders have also acknowledged the weight of the 'brand value' carried by the name of a country. "Although there is no constitutional objection to calling India "Bharat," which is one of the two official names of this country, I hope the government will not be so foolish as to completely discard "India," which has countless brand value that has been built over centuries," said senior Congress leader, Shashi Tharoor, posting on the X platform (previously known as Twitter).
India is next in line after several countries that have changed their names to free themselves from their colonial heritage. For example, Sri Lanka changed its name from Ceylon in 2011, and Thailand changed its name from Siam.
There was even a commotion after it was reported that the Rashtrapati Bhavan had sent invitations for the G20 dinner on September 9 on behalf of 'President Bharat' instead of 'President India'. Some reports state that on September 18, the Center will officially announce the name change.
Meanwhile, Congress accuses the government of being "afraid" of the Indian bloc and diverting attention from issues such as price hikes and increasing unemployment. "So the news is indeed true. Rashtrapati Bhawan has sent an invitation for a G20 dinner on September 9th on behalf of 'President Bharat' instead of 'President India' as usual," said Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh in a writing on X.
A war of words also occurred between opposition parties and BJP with several leaders from the ruling party, including Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who supported the name change.
