The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo) recorded 12 thousand reports of online shopping fraud. The same report also noted 405 thousand reports of online transaction fraud, 19 thousand reports of fictitious online investment fraud, as well as 12 thousand reports of online shopping fraud. These facts are based on the CekRekening.id service during the period 2017-2022 owned by Kemenkominfo with a total of 486 thousand reports.

From the background of the phenomenon of FOMO, PT Global Digital Niaga Tbk (Blibli) conducted a social experiment called Vomoshop. This is an educational e-commerce simulation website that was initiated from concerns about the FOMO culture in society's shopping habits, which often leads to negligence and becoming a target of scams. Throughout September 2023, a social experiment was conducted with a series of deceptive online advertisements that led the Indonesian society to a website to determine how vulnerable they are to fraud.

In the report presented by Head of Public Relations Blibli, Yolanda Nainggolan in Jakarta on (Thursday, November 30, 2023), Vomoshop displayed a social experiment with offers such as Buy 1 get 1, special price only Rp50 thousand, discounts, and others. As a result, out of a total of 63,196 visitors, the majority of visitors were aged 25-34 years old and the least were aged above 65 years old. The gender breakdown based on volume is 27 percent female, 35 percent male, and 38 percent prefer not to disclose their gender.
