"Dream - A study reveals the facial differences between rich and poor people. The research conducted by the University of Glasgow and published by the APA Journal of Experimental Psychology reveals that a person's facial expression can indicate whether they come from a wealthy or impoverished background. Citing the New York Post, the study involved white participants."
This study explains that the faces of wealthy people have a more slender shape, smiling mouths, raised eyebrows, closely spaced eyes, and brighter, warmer skin. Such faces are also associated with trust, competence, and warmth.
"Meanwhile, the faces of poor people tend to have a wider, shorter, and flatter shape. Their mouths are lower, and their facial complexion is cold. Such typical faces are also regarded as lower class, less trustworthy, and incompetent."
"Although not mentioned in the study, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, both billionaires, share several traits mentioned in the study. Zuckerberg has a narrow face and Bezos has warm, reddish skin."
The study authors explain that appearance does indeed affect people's judgments. However, such judgments can also lead to misconceptions that harm others. "Such judgments can be formed even just from facial appearance, and this can lead to substantial consequences, including harming those perceived to have a lower social class status," said study author Dr. R. Thora Bjornsdottir.
The research results show that social class stereotypes explain the relationship between facial appearance and the assessment of a person's social class. "This highlights that the stereotypes we hold have consequences on how we view others - these stereotypes bias our perception. Our impressions of others can then lead to certain advantages or disadvantages for them," he added.
"This is not the only research that attempts to assess a person's wealth by looking at their face. A 2017 study from the University of Toronto, \\published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that a person's face can reveal whether they are rich or poor."
This study involves guessing the wealth of real people based on photos, and the study participants guessed with an accuracy of 53%. "As time goes on, your face will continuously reflect and reveal your experiences," said one of the study's authors, Nicholas Rule. "Even when we feel we are not expressing something, the remnants of those emotions still exist," he continued.
