"Dream - The storm of layoffs (PHK) is still not fully over. The global tech giant, Intel, has announced it will lay off more than 15,000 of its employees. The chipmaker currently employs over 125,000 workers. Intel's management told The Verge that these layoffs are part of a cost-saving plan worth US$10 billion for the year 2025."
"This is painful news for me to share. I know it will be harder for you to read it,"
this is the content of some memos from Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger to the staff.
"Intel will reduce research and development (R&D) and marketing expenditures by billions of US dollars each year until 2026. They will also cut capital spending by more than 20 percent this year."
The company also reported a loss of US$1.6 billion for the second quarter of 2024, significantly larger than the loss of US$437 million in the last quarter.
“Our Q2 financial performance was disappointing, even as we reached important milestones in product and process technology,” Gelsinger stated in the company’s press release. “Our revenue has not grown as expected, and we have not fully capitalized on great trends like AI,” he wrote in his employee memo.”
The second quarter revenue reached US$12.8 billion, down only 1 percent year-over-year, but not all of Intel's businesses experienced failures. Intel also incurred losses in its chip manufacturing business due to investments in new factories and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, with an operational loss of US$7 billion in 2023 and another US$2.8 billion in this quarter. However, the company's products themselves did not incur losses.
"Almost all losses in this quarter and the previous quarter came from Foundry, while its product sales remained relatively stable, its PC and server business is still considered profitable. The company will also receive up to US$8.5 billion in government funding from the Chips Act."
"Intel previously conducted massive layoffs in October 2022, when the company also announced it would cut costs between US$8 billion and US$10 billion each year until 2025. While the number of employees decreased by about 5 percent in 2023, from 131,900 employees to 124,800 employees. Then Intel began hiring again, reaching up to 130,700 employees as of March 30, 2024, according to its financial records."
