Choon Piow is the first-generation owner of this business and has been running it for 54 years since he was 25 years old. Bubur Ikan Pao Ji first started in 1969 as a simple pushcart along Hong Kong Street and in 1983, this cart was one of the first carts to move to Amoy Street Food Centre.
In an interview with Timeout Singapore in April 2017, Choon Phiow revealed that the life of a street vendor is not a glamorous one, especially with long working hours and difficult customers. "Tell everyone: don't work in this industry," he said.
Other elderly food vendors are also trying to sell their businesses. Last week, it was reported that Phua Gek Sia, the owner of the famous Michelin Bib Gourmand brand, To-Ricos Kway Chap, was trying to sell his recipe as he plans to retire. Speaking to AsiaOne, the 70-year-old food seller said that he made this decision because of his advancing age. "Retirement is not actually my main motive. But I am not getting any younger, I want to [sit] in the backseat and have strategic investors to help develop the business," Phua Gek Sia explained.
"As we know, a shortage of labor has always been a problem. Especially for street vendors, we can only hire local people and PR [Permanent Residents]. And for kway chap, this job involves a lot of organ [meat] cleaning, which is not something that many people like," she said. "If there are no buyers, Gek Sia will still continue working but with reduced working hours."
