"There are 4 main reasons Muhammadiyah decided to accept the IUP offer."
"Dream - The Central Board (PP) of Muhammadiyah has officially decided to accept the offer of a Mining Business License (IUP) from the government. This certainty addresses the circulating issues regarding this religious organization that has been reported to receive the IUP or concession license. The certainty that PP Muhammadiyah will accept the IUP from the government was obtained after an internal meeting held today (Sunday, July 28, 2024)."
"Muhammadiyah is ready to accept the (license) for the management of the mine due to the fundamental consideration of wanting to realize justice and social welfare for the public," said the General Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir during a press conference at Aisyiyah University (Unisa) Yogyakarta, Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta, as quoted from Antara News Agency, Sunday, July 28, 2024."
"According to Haidar, mining operations as well as other businesses have social and environmental problems. However, various studies also indicate that mining operations have the potential to be developed for the welfare of the general public."
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of PP Muhammadiyah, Abdul Mu'ti, stated that his organization decided to accept the IUP offered by the government after considering inputs, studies, and several discussions during the plenary meeting of PP Muhammadiyah on July 13, 2024. This decision was made after a comprehensive review and input from mining experts, legal experts, councils/institutions within PP Muhammadiyah, mining managers/businesspeople, environmental experts, universities, and other related parties.
"Regarding the reasons why PP Muhammadiyah changed its stance on IUP, Mu'ti explained that there are several reasons held by his organization. The first reason is that natural resources are a gift from Allah SWT and humans are given the authority to manage them. "Utilizing them optimally for material and spiritual well-being while maintaining balance and not causing damage to the earth," he said."
The other reason is the Fatwa of the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid PP Muhammadiyah regarding the Management of Mining and the Urgency of a Just Energy Transition, which states that mining as an activity of extracting mineral energy from the earth's crust falls into the category of muamalah, which is originally permissible. Another consideration is Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution, which states that the earth, water, and natural resources contained therein are controlled by the state and utilized for the greatest prosperity of the people.
"In accordance with its authority, the government as the organizer of the state provides an opportunity for Muhammadiyah, among other reasons due to its services to the nation and state, to manage mines for the independence and welfare of the community," he said."
He stated that the decision of the 47th Muhammadiyah Muktamar in Makassar 2015 mandated the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah to strengthen da'wah in the economic field in addition to da'wah in the fields of education, health, social welfare, tabligh, and other da'wah fields. Based on the decision made in 2017, Muhammadiyah has published the Guidelines for Muhammadiyah-Owned Enterprises (BUMM) to expand and enhance Muhammadiyah's da'wah in the industrial, tourism, service, and other business sectors.
