Dream - Japan is currently facing a worrying surge in cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) infection. Other Asian countries, including Indonesia, are also on alert due to the spread of the disease.
This infection is caused by Group A Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, which is more commonly known as "flesh-eating" bacteria. Until now, the number of STSS cases in Japan has exceeded 1,000, triggering concerns worldwide.
This bacteria is known as "flesh-eating" because of its ability to quickly destroy skin, fat, and tissue around the muscles. It is transmitted through respiration and droplets (saliva or mucus) from the infected person.
According to the Head of the Communication and Public Service Bureau, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, "until now, there have been no reports of the 'flesh-eating' bacteria cases in Indonesia." Nevertheless, Indonesia continues to carefully monitor the situation through the sentinel surveillance of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) - Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and genomic testing.
The following is the translation of the 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Cases of STSS in Japan are generally reported in hospitals and often appear with symptoms of pharyngitis or inflammation in the throat. This infection can be fatal as it can cause sepsis and multiorgan failure. However, the exact cause is still unknown because STSS symptoms are usually mild and can heal on their own in a short period of time."
Since 1999, Japan has reported cases of streptococcus infection in the surveillance notification system. In 2023, there were 941 cases recorded, and this number increased to 977 cases in June 2024. Although the number is significant, the spread rate of STSS is much lower compared to COVID-19.
To prevent the spread of STSS, the public is urged to continue practicing a healthy lifestyle, such as wearing a mask when sick and washing hands regularly. "The most important thing at the moment is to continue good habits that have been formed during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as washing hands with soap and wearing masks, in order to minimize the transfer of droplets through respiration," said Dr. Nadia, as quoted from the Sehatnegeriku Kemkes website.
"Until now, there are no travel restrictions to and from Japan related to STSS. Based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) report on the increase in iGAS or invasive Group A Streptococcal disease cases, including STSS, in Europe in December 2022, there are no recommendations to restrict travel to affected countries."
Treatment of STSS is done by administering antibiotics. Until now, there is no specific vaccine to prevent infection from this "flesh-eating" bacteria. Therefore, prevention through cleanliness and prompt medical action if infected becomes the main key. Source: Sehatnegeriku.kemkes.go.id.
