In the Bamboo Curtain Country, the house is known as a "nail house" or "dingzihu" in Mandarin, where the owner refuses to move when developers plan to carry out a project in the area.

The woman who owns the house, known only by her last name Liang, refuses compensation from the developers, who want to demolish it as part of the plan to build a new highway.

Although Liang managed to keep her house, her view is now only two wings of the Haizhuyong Bridge. Because the developers continue with the highway project.

The single-story building is located right in the middle of a hole in the four-lane traffic. Despite being dark and noisy, Liang still admires her house.

"You think this environment is bad, but I feel calm, liberated, enjoyable, and comfortable," said Liang as quoted from the Daily Star, Tuesday, June 6, 2023.

Authorities claim that they offered Liang many apartments and cash compensation schemes. But Liang refused to give in.

Liang's reason for refusing to move is that the government failed to offer a new house located in a more desirable location.

The plan to build the Haizhuyong Bridge started in 2010, and after a decade of planning, they are finally ready to start the project.

Before the bridge construction, engineers evaluated safety risks and decided to proceed with the plan.

According to Oddity Central, one of the most popular stories about the farm's existence is because its owners, Ken and Beth Wild, refused to sell their land.

However, according to an ITV documentary in 1983, the owner of Stott Hall Farm was actually never asked to sell their land.

During the construction of the M62 toll road in the 1960s, engineers determined that it was more practical to build the road around the farm rather than on top of it, so they allowed the owners to stay.

"Geological faults beneath the farmhouse made it more practical for engineers to leave it rather than blow it up and destroy it," said journalist Michael Clegg.

So what is it like living on a farm in the middle of a toll road?

If you think this place would be filled with road noise and pollution, the reality is quite the opposite. Those who have lived at Stott Hall Farm claim otherwise.

One reason is because of the triple-glazed windows, there is almost no sound inside the farmhouse, except for occasional honking in the middle of the night, and the air is very clean.

The current owners are Jill Falkingham-Thorp, along with her husband Paul, and their son John William. She told Manchester's Finest that the farm has a very low level of pollution for a place located in the middle of a toll road.

They enjoy their peaceful life in one of the weirdest farms in the world, but they admit that it can sometimes feel lonely, as their closest friends live about half an hour away.
