Minister of Communications and Informatics States that There are Banks Selling Customers' Personal Data

Dream - Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi mentioned that several banks have been fined for intentionally selling their customers' personal data.

"There are several banks, I won't mention them, we fined them because they leaked customers' personal data," said Budi Arie in a Kominfo webinar titled Fighting Digital Financial Crimes, Monday, August 21, 2023.

He mentioned that some customer data is sold by bank employees. The data has become a commodity that is traded.

"For example, if there are several, 10 million customers sold, it becomes a commodity, it becomes individuals within the company," said Budi.

However, customer's personal data is valuable. Banks should be able to secure it so that it cannot leak or be sold.

"So, what is valuable here is not gold, not diamonds, but data, which is a valuable commodity, especially with the future development of artificial intelligence, data is extraordinary," he said.

Therefore, Kominfo and various ministries and institutions continue to collaborate to eradicate crimes in the digital field. This includes preventing the buying and selling of customer data in the banking sector.

"This collaboration must continue across ministries and institutions to reduce digital crimes, because as digital technology advances, the crimes become more sophisticated and complex," he concluded.
