Neglecting the Wife's Expenses

A husband has an obligation to provide for his wife. Therefore, it is his duty to fulfill this obligation as best as he can. As explained in the following hadith:

"A person is considered sinful if they neglect the expenses of those under their responsibility." (Narrated by Abu Dawud, Muslim, Ahmad, and Thabarani)"

Not Providing a Safe Dwelling

As a husband, one should provide a safe dwelling for his wife. The dwelling should be a place of refuge for the wife and children, especially when the husband has to leave the house to seek livelihood. Therefore, a safe dwelling is very important. This is also explained in the Quran in Surah At-Talaq verse 6:

وَالْمُطَلَّقَاتُ يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنفُسِهِنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُوءٍ ۚ وَلَا يَحِلُّ لَهُنَّ أَن يَكْتُمْنَ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ فِي أَرْحَامِهِنَّ إِن كُنَّ يُؤْمِنَّ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ۚ وَبُعُولَتُهُنَّ أَحَقُّ بِرَدِّهِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ إِنْ أَرَادُوا إِصْلَاحًا ۚ وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ۚ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

Meaning: "Place them (the wives) where you reside according to your means, and do not harm them in order to oppress them. And if they are pregnant, provide for them until they give birth. Then if they breastfeed for you, give them their payment and confer among yourselves in the acceptable way. But if you are in discord, then another woman shall breastfeed for him." (QS.At'Talaq: 6)

Not Fulfilling the Dowry

Another disobedient act of a husband towards his wife is not fulfilling the dowry. This is in accordance with the following hadith:

"I heard the Prophet say, 'Whoever marries a woman with a dowry, small or large, but intends in his heart not to fulfill what is rightfully hers, then he has disregarded her. If he dies before fulfilling her right, then on the Day of Judgment he will meet Allah as a transgressor.'" (Narrated by Thabarani, Al-Mujamul, Ausath II/237/1851)."

Disregarding the Wife's Sexual Needs

Pressuring the Wife

وَلَا تَمْسِكُوا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ وَاسْأَلُوا مَا أَنفَقْتُمْ وَلْيَسْأَلُوا مَا أَنفَقُوا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ حُكْمُ اللَّهِ ۖ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Meaning: "And do not hold on to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the judgment of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise."

Remember the favor of Allah upon you, and what Allah has revealed to you of the Book (the Qur'an) and wisdom (the Sunnah), to instruct you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is Knowing of all things." (QS.Al-Baqarah: 231)

Prayers of a Mistreated Wife

A wife who is oppressed by her husband's actions, then surrender to Allah SWT by reciting the following prayer:

أللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ كُنْ لِي جَارًا مِنْ شِرِّ فُلاَنِ بْنِ فُلاَنٍ وَ شَرِّ الْجِنِّ والْإِنْسِ وَ أَتْبَاعِهِمْ أنْ يَفْرُطَ عَلَيَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ أوْ أَنْ يَطْغَى عَزَّ جَارُكَ وَ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُكَ وَ لآ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Allahumma Robbis Samaawatis Sab'i wa Robbal 'Arsyil 'Azhimi Kun Lii Jaarom Min Syarri Fulani bin Fulaan wa Syarril Jinni wal Insi wa Atbaa'ihim an Yafrutho 'alayya Ahadun Minhum au ayyatgho 'azza Jaaruka wa Jalla Tsanaauka wa Laa ilaha Ghoiruka.

Meaning: "O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and the Great Throne, be my Protector from the evil of so-and-so (mention the person's name), from the evil of Jinn and human beings and their followers, so that none of them may harm me or transgress against me. Your protection is powerful and Your greatness is exalted, and there is no god but You." (HR at-Thabrani)

رَبِّ نَجِّنِيْ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ
