The History Mentioned in Surah Al-Fil

The tafsir scholars explain that the main content of Surah Al-Fil is about the military expedition of Abrahah with various narrations. One narration states that Abrahah was actually a governor in the Najashi region, Yemen. At that time, he built a large church in Yemen. He wanted the cathedral he built to be the biggest church that had ever existed before.

His ambition did not stop there, he then wanted to force the Arab people to change their qibla from the Ka'bah to that church. After obtaining permission from the King of Najashi, Abrahah launched his attack on the city of Mecca with an army riding elephants.

Actually, the desire to destroy the Ka'bah stemmed from envy towards the Arab people. Many people flocked to Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage. This triggered a large economic circulation there. This is what made Abrahah want to change the qibla to Yemen.

During the journey to the city of Mecca, the elephant army fought against every Arab inhabitant they passed. The news of the attack quickly reached the people of Mecca, that Abrahah had a mission to destroy the Ka'bah. The people of Mecca were worried and frightened upon hearing this news.

When he was about to enter the city, Abrahah sent an envoy named Aswad bin Maqsud to negotiate with the people of Mecca. The envoy of Abrahah held a consultation with the Quraish elders, including the grandfather of Prophet Muhammad SAW, Abdul Muttalib.

Abdul Muttalib decided to give hundreds of camels to the envoy in order to thwart the invasion plan of Mecca. Many Quraish tribes were disappointed with this decision because they wanted to kill the envoy of Abrahah.

Lessons to be Learned

In general, the main content of Surah Al-Fil is to invite the Prophet Muhammad and his people, including the Quraysh, to observe the signs of Allah's power, especially from history.

Surah Al-Fil reminds the Quraysh of Allah's blessings, which are providing them with security and saving them from the army of Abrahah that intended to destroy the Ka'bah.

It is very easy for Allah to help whom He wills. And it is very easy for Allah to destroy whom He wants to destroy. It is also very easy for Allah to bring about ways and means of destruction for His enemies.

This surah affirms the mighty power of Allah, and all powers submit to His power. So whoever is protected by Him, no one can harm him. On the other hand, whoever is destroyed by Allah, no one can protect him.

It is very easy for Allah to help whom He wills. And it is very easy for Allah to destroy whom He wants to destroy. It is also very easy for Allah to bring about ways and means of destruction for His enemies.
