The Story of a Man Who Broke the Ramadan Fast

It is narrated that Prophet Muhammad once was approached by a man. The man told the Prophet that he had broken his Ramadan fast because he could not control his desires to be intimate with his wife.

"One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, a man came to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am doomed.' The Messenger of Allah responded, 'What happened to you?' The man replied, 'I had sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting in Ramadan.' The Messenger of Allah asked him, 'Do you have a slave that you can free?' He answered, 'No, O Messenger of Allah.'

When the man mentioned this incident, the Prophet asked him again:

'Are you able to fast for two consecutive months?' The man replied, 'I am not able to, O Messenger of Allah,' The Prophet Muhammad asked again, 'Do you have enough food to feed sixty poor people?' The man answered, 'No, O Messenger of Allah.'

In that situation, the Prophet Muhammad obtained a large amount of dates. Then the Prophet gave the dates to the man and instructed him to give charity with those dates.

'Where is the questioner?' The man replied, 'It is me, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet Muhammad said to him, 'Take these dates and give them as charity' (as an expiation for the broken fast).

Not stopping there, the man asked the Prophet again:

'Should I give these dates to someone who is poorer than me, O Messenger of Allah? By Allah, O Messenger, there is no one in my area who is poorer than me and my family.' The Prophet Muhammad laughed, revealing his molars, and said, 'Feed your family with these dates.' (Narrated by Bukhari)

Through this story, there are lessons that we can learn. It is known that fasting in Ramadan is obligatory for those who are able to do so. Where when leaving the fast due to obstacles, it is obligatory to make up or replace the fast outside of Ramadan. But if it is left intentionally, then it can bring about sin.
