Dream - Robotics engineers from a technology startup based in Pittsburgh, United States, claim to have found the fastest shoes in the world. The shoes, named Moonwalkers, are powered by a battery that is claimed to increase walking speed by up to 250 percent.
The Moonwalkers look like a pair of futuristic roller shoes. Users can walk normally as if wearing regular sneakers, but the spring wheels in the shoes provide extra speed when stepping.
Supported by advanced technology, these smart shoes are actually platforms that can be attached to various types of footwear. Moonwalkers significantly increase the walking speed of users to 7 to 11 miles per hour.
For comparison, the average walking speed of humans ranges from 2.5 to 4 miles per hour.
Designed by Shift Robotics, a department of Carnegie Mellon University, Moonwalkers consist of a 300W brushless engine in each shoe with a weight of 1.9 kilograms that moves eight wheels.
There is also an AI-powered gearbox that adjusts the speed based on data about the user's walking collected by a series of sensors. These shoes can also detect downhill movements to prevent accidents.
"Moonwalkers are not skates. They are shoes. They are actually the fastest shoes in the world. You won't slip when wearing them. But it feels like walking. Users don't have to learn how to use them, because these smart shoes will learn your movements," said Xunjie Zang, founder and CEO of Shift Robotics, as quoted from the Oddity Central website, Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
But can the world's fastest shoes work on uneven terrain, such as stairs?
Apparently, the designers have considered that and implemented a simple motion that allows users to lock the wheels so they can walk up or down stairs just like they do with regular footwear.
The Moonwalkers shoe series was launched on Monday, October 24, 2022 as part of the Kickstarter campaign.
The shoe series is expected to be officially released in March 2023 with a retail price of US$1,399 or around Rp21.8 million per pair.
They operate on the principle of users walking along a "moving road," according to Kickstarter.
