What Does it Mean for a Woman to Dress but Naked?

The command to cover the aura in Islam certainly has a purpose that is sometimes unnoticed. One of them is that Islam wants all of its followers to be protected from temptation and sins. Especially women who often become the target of temptation.

Allah SWT commands Muslims to cover their aura, which consists of the entire body except the face and the palms of the hands. However, not all women follow this command of Allah SWT. There are still Muslim women who appear to be dressed but do not fulfill the sharia.

The book by Sheikh Mahmud Al-Mishri, namely Rihlah Ila Ad-Dar Al-Akhirah, even explains that one of the signs of the end times is the emergence of people who dress but are naked.

Those Who Will Inhabit Hell

Some people interpret dressing but naked as shown by women who like to show their aura or also called Al-Mutabarrijat.

In a hadith, it is also explained who will become the inhabitants of Hell. Here is the saying of the Prophet Muhammad:

"There are two types of people of Hell whom I have not seen yet: a group of people who have whips like the tails of cows to beat people, and women who are dressed but in fact they are not dressed, they remove the head covering, they are inclined to commit sins, their heads are like the humps of camels, they will not enter Paradise or smell its fragrance, although the fragrance of Paradise can be smelled from a distance." However, men should not be happy yet. Not only women who do not cover their aura will become the inhabitants of Hell.

Men who allow their wives and daughters to go out without covering their aura can also enter Hell.

Meaning of Dressing but Naked

So, what does it mean to dress but naked?

Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi explained that dressing but naked means wearing clothes that do not function to cover the aura. These clothes can reveal the skin because they are thin or too tight.

Even Aisha (RA) once reprimanded some women from the Bani Tamim tribe who wore thin clothes.

"If you are true believers, then this is not the type of clothing for believing women." (Narrated by Thabrani and others)

In addition to wearing thin clothes, clothes that accentuate the body curves can also bring temptation to women. Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi said that such clothing models are creations of international Jewish fashion designers. They manipulate humans like dolls. They should wear clothes that comply with Islamic law.

In the Quran, there is also a message for believing women, through Surah An-Nur verse 31:

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed." (Quran 24:31)
