The report from the South Korean government estimates that the population will decline to 36.2 million in 2072 from the current number of 51.7 million over the next 50 years. The elderly population, defined as those aged 70 and over, is expected to increase dramatically, nearly doubling to over 10 million by 2033 from 5.92 million in 2022.

The latest data shows a significant shift in views on marriage in South Korea. In 2022, only 27.5% of women and 41.9% of men in their 20s stated that "a woman should marry" or "it is better for a woman to marry," down from 52.9% and 71.9% in 2008. Among those in their 30s, 31.8% of women and 48.7% of men agreed with a similar statement, down from 51.5% and 69.7%.

"In 2020, 47.7 percent of respondents had a positive view of single individuals, up from 39.1 percent in 2015. This indicates a shift in social norms related to marital status."

"More than 40 percent of respondents said that living together is no longer seen as a source of social stigma, up from 25.9 percent in 2015. This reflects a change in social norms regarding relationships and cohabitation without formal marriage."

"Although there is an increase in acceptance of people with disabilities (93 percent), the acceptance rate as life partners only reaches 2.7 percent. This indicates that despite the acceptance, there are obstacles in accepting individuals with certain uniqueness as life partners."
