In the field of biology, mimicry refers to the phenomenon in which two or more organisms that are not closely related taxonomically show superficial similarities. In this context, the imitator gains an advantage by pretending to be the original organism or a part of the original organism. Here are a series of animals that utilize the most extraordinary ability of mimicry to survive!
A classic example of the phenomenon of mimicry in the animal world can be found in the red king snake. This snake, although non-venomous, exhibits a striking resemblance to the venomous eastern coral snake.
Both species have patterns of red, yellow (or white), and black lines on their bodies. The red king snake, which is non-venomous, uses this resemblance to deceive predators into thinking that they are a dangerous threat.
The following is the translation of the 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Grasshoppers orchids appear like beautiful blooming flowers, but deadly. Grasshoppers orchids are pink and white in color, their habitat is located in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, attracting pollinators by disguising themselves as flower petals before attacking."
Robberflies, also known as killer flies, are insects that feed on other insects by injecting paralyzing venom into their bodies.
The insect has blurred yellow and black stripes on its body, making them appear like bees. Bumblebee Robberflies prey on bees, and they benefit when they successfully mimic something that is not a bee.
Sometimes animals benefit from their resemblance, and it is unclear which species imitates each other.
For example, the king butterflies are orange and black poisonous, and their predators know it. The young king butterflies look very similar, and it turns out they are also poisonous. Both species have the same predator, and their orange-black color is a big danger sign that should be avoided.
Octopus is an expert in camouflage and mimicry skills. The mimicking octopus distinguishes itself even among the cephalopod group as a species skilled in deceiving its observers.
By using color-changing pigments on their flexible skin and body, mimic octopuses are able to transform into flatfish (camouflaging as potential prey), venomous sea snakes, or venomous lionfish.
