When the rain does not come, Muslims are encouraged to seek forgiveness from Allah SWT by increasing istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and prayers. Prayers are also needed to be offered when facing a long drought, to ask for the grace of rain from the Almighty. So that the rain will come soon and bring blessings to the universe, let us offer the following prayers when facing a long drought!

1. Prayer When Facing a Long Drought Asking for Help

A friend once complained to the Prophet Muhammad during the Friday sermon about the drought that was affecting his region. The person asked the Prophet to pray to Allah. This is the prayer that the Prophet Muhammad recited during that time: "اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا". It means: "O Allah, help us. O Allah, help us." (Muttafaq Alaih)

2. Prayer when Facing Drought for Rain to Fall

The following is a prayer for heavy rain that can be practiced after performing the istisqa prayer: اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا مَرِيئًا هَنِيئًا مَرِيعًا غَدَقًا مُجَلَّلًا عَامًا طَبَقًا سَحًا دَائِمًا Allāhummasqinā ghaitsan mughītsan hanī'an marī'an (riwayat lain: murī'an) ghadaqan mujallalan 'aamman thabaqan sahhan dā'iman. Meaning: "O Allah, send down upon us rain that is beneficial, abundant, nourishing, widespread, and perpetual."

Saat hujan tak kunjung turun, umat Islam dianjurkan untuk memohon ampunan kepada Allah SWT dengan memperbanyak istighfar dan doa.

"Latin Prayer Reading"

"Alhamdulillāhi rabbil ālamīn. Arrahmānir rahīm. Māliki yaumid dīn. Lā ilāha illallāhu yaf‘alu mā yurīd. Allahumma antallāhu. Lā ilāha illā anta. Antal ghaniyyu wa nahnul fuqarā`. Anzil ‘alainal ghaitsa waj‘al mā anzalta ‘alainā quwwatan wa balaghan ilā hīn."

"Meaning:"

"“All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. The Master of the Day of Judgment. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah. He does whatever He wills. O Allah, You are Allah. There is no god worthy of worship except You. You are the Most Rich. While we are in need of You. So send down rain upon us. Make what You have sent down as strength and provision for us until the appointed day.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud)"

4. Prayer when Facing Long Drought and Drying Wells:
If the well dries up, daily activities will be disrupted. This is a prayer that can be practiced when facing a long drought and a dry well. لَّهُمَّ جَلَّلْنَا سَحَابًا, كَثِيفًا, قَصِيفًا, دَلُوقًا, ضَحُوكًا, تُمَطِّرُنَا مِنْهُ رَذَاذًا, قَطْقَطًا, سَجْلًا, يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

Allāhumma jallilnā saḥāban, katsīfan, qashīfan, dalūqan, dhaḥūqan, thumthirunā minhu radzādzan, qith-qithan, sajlan, yā dzal jalāli wal ikrām.

"Meaning:"
"O Allah, spread the rain on our earth, thicken the clouds, with thunder that roars, powerful, and lightning; from one of those clouds, You rain on us with heavy drops of small rain, drizzling, which waters the earth evenly, O Great and Glorious Being."

"(HR. Abu Awanah)" translates to "(Reported by Abu Awanah)" in English.

5. Prayer for Rain during the Long Dry Season

This prayer is a story of an ant during the time of Prophet Sulaiman (AS) as narrated by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to his companions. اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا خَلْقٌ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، لَيْسَ بِنَا غَنًى عَنْ سُقْيَاكَ Allāhumma innā khalqun min khalqika, laysa binā ghinan 'an suqyāka. Meaning, "O Allah, we are one of Your creations. We cannot survive without the blessings of Your water." (HR. Ahmad)"

6. Prayer during Drought

If your area is affected by drought and water scarcity, then seek help from Allah SWT by reciting the following prayer for rain: لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ Translation: "There is no god but Allah, the Almighty, the Most Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the Great Throne. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the noble Throne."

7. Prayer for Rain during Drought:
اللهم اسقنا غيثا مغيثا مريئا مريئا، نافعا غير ضار، عاجلا غير آجل Allahummasqina ghaytsan mughitsan mari'an mari'an, nafi'an ghayra darrin, 'ajilan ghayra ajilin.

Translation: "Meaning: 'O Allah, grant us rain that pours, that is evenly distributed, that is beneficial, not harmful, immediately, not delayed.'"
