"New Zealand is an amazing place, filled with green hills, dramatic glacier-carved valleys, and dozens of volcanoes. This country is special for various reasons, including its spectacular wildlife. There are many unique species that call New Zealand home, from the iconic kiwi bird to the yellow-eyed penguin, which indeed has yellow-colored eyes. Here are other unique species found in New Zealand!"
1. Tuatara
"As the last surviving member of the group of ancient reptiles, the tuatara is technically not a lizard. This animal belongs to the order Rhynchocephalia, and its ancestors coexisted with dinosaurs."
The tuatara has a distinctive feature in the form of a row of spines along its neck and back that they can raise to create a prominent impression. This lizard-like animal is also equipped with a light-sensitive organ known as the "third eye," located on the top of its head to help regulate its circadian rhythm.
2. Hector's dolphin
"Dolphin Hector is a small and adorable type of dolphin. This dolphin has a length of about 5 feet and is only found in the coastal waters around New Zealand, especially around the South Island of New Zealand."
"Unlike most other dolphins that have pointed dorsal fins, Hector's dolphin dorsal fin is rounded and black. They bear a striking resemblance to a dolphin species that can only be found in New Zealand, namely the Māui dolphin."
"3. Penguin with Yellow Eyes"
The yellow-eyed penguin, known as hoiho by the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand, has yellow eyes and even yellow feathers around it. "Hoiho" means "noise shouter," and according to the Māori, the name is fitting for this bird given its habit of often calling loudly when calling its mate.
The yellow-eyed penguin lives on New Zealand's South Island and the surrounding islands, unlike most penguin species that come from Antarctica. Interestingly, this penguin does not form nesting colonies like other penguins.
4. Kākāpōs
One more bird that cannot fly, namely the kākāpō, is a unique type of parrot with a waddling walking movement and the ability to climb trees.
"Kākāpō has a striking green color and is the heaviest parrot that has ever existed, with males weighing nearly 5 pounds (2.2 kilograms). They are often referred to as the 'owl parrot' because of their owl-like faces, as well as because they are active at night."
"5. Kiwi"
"Kiwi is a small bird that cannot fly with a long and thin beak. There are five different species—brown kiwi, large spotted kiwi, small spotted kiwi, rowi, and tokoeka."
"Kiwi is related to the emu, cassowary, and the extinct moa. Unfortunately, the Kiwi population is threatened due to human impact on their habitat. Female Kiwis lay large eggs that can weigh up to 20% of their body weight."
