"Opening the Fast is not an opportunity for 'Revenge', Revisit the Wisdom of Fasting"

Dream - Fasting in Islam is not just about restraining hunger, thirst, and desires. The meaning of fasting is very deep, which is an act of worship that aims to train and discipline oneself. Especially in this month of Ramadan, when Muslim men and women who have reached puberty have an obligation to fast for a whole month. However, some people feel that restraining from eating and drinking for hours is a punishment. Until it's time to break the fast, they seem to be taking revenge.

The person who fasts will unleash what they have been holding back for half a day when they break their fast. The simplest example is that they will indulge in excessive food to satisfy their cravings.

In such conditions, what about the essence of fasting itself? Those who seek revenge when breaking their fast seem to be fasting out of sheer compulsion. Now, here is an explanation from the Islamic perspective regarding the phenomenon of 'revenge' when breaking the fast, as summarized by Dream through various sources.

Tujuan Puasa dalam Al-Quran dan Hadis

Objective of Fasting in the Quran and Hadith

"Fasting certainly has specific purposes in Islam. It has been explained in the Al-Quran and hadith. The following are some important purposes of fasting that need to be understood:"

1. Media Brings Us Closer to Allah SWT

Fasting is a means to get closer to Allah SWT. As explained in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 183: "O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous."

2. Grateful Many

Puasa is a moment to be grateful to Allah SWT. Where during fasting, a person must restrain from eating and drinking until the break time. For hours of hunger and thirst, and then breaking the fast, there is a great pleasure that is felt. At that moment, a feeling of gratitude that is so high emerges. Even though breaking the fast with little food and drink, you will feel incomparable pleasure.

3. Discipline Yourself

Fasting is a means to discipline oneself. That is by obeying Allah's command to carry out what has been obligated. In this case, it is to control one's desires by fasting. It is also explained in the following hadith: "O young people, whoever is able to marry, then marry. Indeed, marriage is more capable of lowering one's gaze and easier to guard one's chastity."

Whoever is not able to get married, then let them fast, for fasting is a restraint of desire." (Narrated by Imam Ahmad and Imam Bukhari)

4. Please seek forgiveness from Allah SWT

"Allah SWT loves His servants who fast to seek His pleasure. Indeed, this holy month is filled with Allah SWT's forgiveness. So, do not miss the opportunity to seek forgiveness from Allah SWT abundantly in the month of Ramadan. As explained in the following hadith: 'Whoever fasts in Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.' (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)"

"'Revenge' in Fasting that Affects the Spiritual"

The attitude of 'revenge' when the time to break the fast arrives is actually not a good attitude to apply while fasting.

After enduring hunger and thirst for hours, and then satisfying his desires when the time for breaking the fast arrived, this indirectly indicates the presence of coercion in fasting. Where fasting is not a personal awareness to cleanse oneself, elevate human qualities, and provide positive things for the soul, but only to fulfill religious obligations.

People who do things like this are just like people who don't want to steal only because stealing is prohibited by law. Not because of a realization that such actions should not be done.
