Dream - Arafah fasting is one of the recommended voluntary fasts for Muslims, especially for those who are not performing the Hajj pilgrimage. Arafah fasting itself is observed on the 9th of Dzulhijjah, or a day before the Eid al-Adha celebration. It is during this time that Hajj pilgrims are performing the wukuf (standing in prayer) in Arafah. Observing the Arafah fast has various virtues that would be a pity to miss. However, during this moment, there are usually some Muslims, especially women, who still have outstanding fasts from Ramadan.
Then, what is the ruling on fasting Arafah, but still having a debt of fasting Ramadan? To find out the answer, here is how Dream has summarized it through various sources.
"Not a few Muslims are still confused about performing Arafah fasting on the 9th of Dzulhijjah, but on the other hand, they still have unpaid Ramadan fasting debts."
Quoted from nu.or.id, according to the Deputy Secretary of the Bahtsul Masail of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (LBM PBNU), Alhafiz Kurniawan stated that fasting performed on the recommended day can be intended for qadha or nazar, and still receive the virtues of the sunnah as well. Furthermore, it is explained in the book Ansal Mathalib Juz V by Sheikh Zakariya Al-Anshari, that a person who fasts on the day of Ashura, for example, for qadha or nazar fasting, will still receive the reward of fasting on the day of Ashura.
The opinion has been agreed upon by Al-Ushfuwani, Al-Faqih Abdullah An-Nasyiri, Al-Faqih Ali bin Ibrahim bin Shalih Al-Hadhrami. That opinion is a strong opinion. In addition, in the book I'anatut Thalibin, in Al-Kurdi there is a text written in Asnal Mathalib and similar, namely Al-Khatib As-Syarbini, Sheikh Sulaiman Al-Jamal, Sheikh Ar-Ramli, that the voluntary fasting on highly recommended days is indeed intended for that day. However, if there is someone who fasts with a different intention on that day, then they will still receive its virtues.
"However, it is recommended for Muslims to make up for the missed Ramadan fasts first. Only then can they perform voluntary fasting. It is different if our friend Dream just remembers having missed Ramadan fasts before the day of Arafah, then it is better to make up for the missed fasts on the day of Arafah."
"For Dream friends who are observing Arafah fasting, here are some virtues that you will obtain:"
The first virtue of fasting on Arafah is that it can erase sins for 2 years. Namely, sins from the past year and sins from the coming year. The Prophet Muhammad said: "Fasting on the Day of Arafah can erase sins from the past two years and the years to come, and fasting on Ashura (the 10th of Muharram) erases sins from the past year."
Every Muslim certainly dreams that when they have passed away, they will be placed in heaven. No human being wants to be placed in hell. One of the practices that can save you from the fire of hell is by observing the voluntary fast on the day of Arafah. The Prophet Muhammad said, "There is no day on which Allah frees His servants from the fire of hell more than the day of Arafah. He draws near and expresses His pride to the angels, saying: 'What do they seek?'" (Narrated by Muslim)
Fasting on Arafah is recommended, one of the reasons being that Allah SWT greatly loves this act of worship. This is explained in the hadith: "There is no righteous deed that is more beloved to Allah than the righteous deed performed during these days (the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah)." The companions asked, "Not even jihad in the way of Allah?" The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, "Not even jihad in the way of Allah, except for a person who goes for jihad with his life and wealth but does not return with anything." (Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah. Similar hadiths are also narrated by Tirmidhi and Ahmad)
