Different from lions and cheetahs in Africa that track or run across open plains in pursuit of prey, clouded leopards have a more arboreal lifestyle and have adapted to living in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. This tree-dwelling lifestyle has led them to have remarkable ankle joints that they can rotate almost 180 degrees. The extraordinary flexibility in these joints allows them to descend from tree trunks headfirst.
"Climbing Trees and Swinging"
In captivity, these cats are seen climbing upside down along horizontal branches and hanging with their hind legs, enabling them to jump down to pursue prey below, although scientists believe that they primarily hunt on the ground.

In 2006, researchers discovered that the clouded leopard is actually two different species, with the one now called the Sunda clouded leopard (N. diardi) endemic to the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
