"The Strange Himalayan Phenomenon Can Actually Cool the Earth That Is Getting Hotter"

"Dream - The glaciers in the Himalayas are experiencing rapid melting due to the global warming crisis. However, recent reports reveal a unique and astonishing phenomenon at the highest peak in the world."

Considered Dangerous, This Strange Phenomenon in the Himalayas Actually Helps Cool the Warming Earth

"When the temperature in highlands reaches a certain threshold due to global warming, a reaction occurs that produces cold winds blowing down the slopes. This is further explained by Francesca Pellicciotti, a professor of glaciology at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and the lead author of the study, "Climate warming creates a significant temperature difference between the air above the Himalayan glaciers and the cold air that comes into direct contact with the ice surface," she stated."

The phenomenon that can actually help reduce the impact of the global climate crisis itself.

This is further explained by Francesca Pellicciotti, a professor of glaciology at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and the lead author of this research. "Climate warming creates significant temperature differences between the air above the Himalayan glaciers and the cold air that directly contacts the ice surface," she stated. This phenomenon leads to increased turbulence of heat exchange at the glacier surface and promotes more intense cooling of the air at the surface.

"When the cool and dry surface air becomes cooler and denser, it forms a flow of air mass that slides down the slope into the valley. This creates a cooling effect in the areas below the glacier and the surrounding ecosystems."

The previous report in June of this year revealed that glaciers in the Himalayas are melting at a rate 65% faster in 2010 compared to the previous decade. This finding indicates that rising temperatures have had a significant impact on the region.

The main impact of rising temperatures on glaciers is an increase in the rate of ice loss caused by the acceleration of the melting process.
"Fanny Brun, a scientist at the Institut des Géosciences de l'Environnement in Grenoble, France."

"Brun is not involved in the research."

"The main mechanism involves the extension and intensification of the ice melt season." This leads to the thinning and retreat of glaciers, which in turn impacts landscape degradation and increases air temperatures due to greater energy absorption by the surface," added Brun."

Energy absorption at the surface is influenced by a concept known as the albedo effect.

The translation of "Apa Itu Albedo?" to English is "What is Albedo?"

"The bright or 'white' surfaces, such as clean snow and ice, tend to reflect more sunlight (have a high albedo) than 'dark' surfaces, such as open land due to glacier melting and land and ocean shrinkage (have a low albedo)."

"Generally, Fanny Brun explains that this phenomenon can be regarded as a positive feedback cycle, which is a process that reinforces change. Nevertheless, the overall phenomenon is still poorly understood and difficult to measure accurately."

"However, at the foot of Mount Everest, the overall average temperature measurements indicate stability rather than an increase. In-depth analysis of the data reveals the reality of what is actually happening. "Although minimum temperatures continue to rise, maximum surface temperatures during the summer continue to decline," said Franco Salerno, a report author and researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) for Italy."

"However, this strange phenomenon of cool winds from the peaks of the Himalayas is not entirely able to combat the increase in temperature and the rate of glacier melting caused by climate change."

"Thomas Shaw, a member of the ISTA research group alongside Pellicciotti, explained that the causes of the rapid glacier melting are complex. "Although this cooling is local, it may still not be strong enough to counteract the broader impacts of climate warming and fully sustain the glaciers," Shaw stated."

"Pellicciotti added that the general limitations of data in highland areas worldwide encourage research teams to focus on the use of unique ground observation records at one of the stations in the Himalayas."

"The process we review in this paper has the potential for global relevance and may occur in any glacier around the world if the conditions are right," he said. The research by Pellicciotti and his colleagues was published on December 4 in the journal Nature Geoscience."
