"Archaeologists in Kazakhstan have discovered two gold ornaments in a 1,500-year-old tomb that showcase the earliest depiction of a great khan, or "khagan," of the Gök Turks, a nomadic confederation of tribes speaking Turkic languages that inhabited the region for about three centuries, according to an archaeologist who excavated the site."
The luxurious gold plaque depicts "a leader wearing a crown, sitting gracefully on a throne in a sacred pose and surrounded by attendants,"
said Zainolla Samashev, an archaeologist at the Institute of Archaeology Kazakhstan who leads the excavation.

"This clearly illustrates the sacred nature of power in ancient Turkic society." he added.
"This finding comes from the Eleke Sazy site near the far eastern border of Kazakhstan with China, Mongolia, and Siberia, Russia, where Samashev and his colleagues have been working since 2016."
The 6th-century Göktürk tomb contains the remains of a nobleman, possibly "tegin" or "prince" in ancient Turkic, whose burial evolved into a "shrine complex" in the 7th century that honored the man's corpse, said Samashev.
Samashev argues that the prince may have originated from the Ashina royal family of the khagan, which means "ruler" in ancient Turkic, and is the origin of the word "khan." The Ashina family established two Turkic states in the Central Eurasian Steppe between the fifth and eighth centuries and ruled until they were conquered by another Turkic group that became the Uyghurs.
The translation of "Plakat Emas" to English is "Gold Plaque".
"Two gold plaques were found in the main room of the tomb where the prince was cremated; one was severely damaged by the cremation fire."
"With a size of about 1.5 inches (3.7 cm), both are types of belt buckles whose ends are passed through holes in the base so that they hang at the waist."
Girdles like this seem to be a symbol of power in Turkic society, said Samashev, and may indicate that the wearer is a person of high status. The Khagan is depicted in the center of each plaque, wearing a decorated crown and sitting on a throne that features two horses; he is surrounded by two kneeling attendants offering food from a plate and bowl.
"This is the oldest verified depiction of a khagan from the Göktürk nation, and it is most likely the great khagan himself, said Samashev."
"It is not yet known whether the plaque was worn by the tegin buried there. They may have been worn by his aides, who placed it during the cremation as a form of participation in the sacred ceremony, said Samashev."

The translation of "Bangsa Turki Awal" to English is "Early Turkish Nation."
The Göktürk tribe or "Heavenly Turkish People" in Central Asia may have originated from an ethnic group under the rule of the Xiongnu, who governed the eastern Eurasian Steppe from around the second century BC to about the first century AD. The burial site may have developed as a social and cultural center for the community to honor the Göktürk beliefs, said Serhan Çınar, an archaeologist from Ankara University who is also involved in the excavation.
“Complex of memorials in Eleke Sazy… related to the entry of the ancient Turkish people into the arena of history, along with their spiritual orientation and ideology, religion, and philosophy,”
The translation of "katanya" to English is "he said" or "she said."
Samashev stated that the complex is made of stone and earth, has a length of about 300 feet (90 meters) and a width of 165 feet (50 m), with two main parts each surrounded by courtyard walls.

"One part is the main temple in a square shape, which includes the central burial space. A "labyrinth" for the pilgrims who come was also built next to it. The central space of the labyrinth contains a stone statue that is now damaged and headless, believed to represent the person buried in the tomb, said Samashev. Hundreds of other artifacts were found at the site. In addition to gold plaques, archaeologists also discovered objects made of silver, iron, and bronze; weapons; remnants of equipment for horses; and an amulet made of stone crystal, revealed Samashev."
