The researchers discovered an ancient mountain hidden beneath the ocean with the most deadly pressure in the world. This discovery was made by a team of researchers from the Australian Government Agency and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) while conducting a voyage in the Southern Ocean. During the research, they observed the heat currents flowing towards the Australian continent through the surface of the sea water.
"However, while conducting observations around the western area of Macquarie Island, the researchers discovered a series of mountains located on the seabed."
The ocean mountains are located about 13,100 feet below the surface of the water, between the regions of Tasmania and Antarctica, surrounded by very strong currents. Geophysicist from SIRO, Chris Yule, identified the mountain as part of an inactive volcano, with a height reaching nearly 5,000 feet, and one of them has dual ventilation.
“Four of the mountains are new discoveries, with two underwater mountains and mountains located along the fault line,” said Yule.
According to researchers, the mountain located in the Macquarie Ridge area is estimated to have formed about 20 million years ago, produced by a hotspot originating from the Earth's mantle. Quoted from News Week, Helen Philips, a researcher from the University of Tasmania, stated that this discovery will provide additional insights related to ocean dynamics.
"The Antarctic Circumpolar Current that passes through mountains, and when it encounters barriers such as ridges or seamounts, it will 'sway'; created in the flow of water that forms eddies. Valleys and cliffs can also accelerate currents in the deep ocean,"
