The Sahara Desert is a place full of extremes in many ways. The largest desert in the world, the Sahara spans an incredible 3,600,000 square miles. It covers almost the entire northern region of Africa! Famous for its scorching heat during the day, the Sahara also experiences low temperatures of only 24 degrees Fahrenheit at night.
The translation of "Ancaman Tiga Kali Lipat" to English is "Threefold Threat."
The factors that cause extreme heat in the Sahara are factors that also cause temperatures below freezing at night. The sun, sand, and lack of moisture combine to create extreme temperatures in this desert.
"First, the Sun"
The Sahara is located north of the equator, which means the sun shines most brightly directly over the desert. Almost twelve hours of continuous sunlight from the very strong sun illuminates the Sahara. The sparse vegetation and lack of cloud cover also mean very few shaded areas to cope with the heat. It's no wonder the desert is as hot as it is!
The translation of "Selanjutnya, Pasir" to English is "Next, Sand".
The NASA report from 2008 found that sand is a good conductor of heat. In deserts like the Sahara, the top layer of sand absorbs the heat of the midday sun while reflecting that heat back into the air. Literally, the air in the Sahara becomes hot from all sides during the day, with the sun shining from above and the sand radiating heat from the ground.
"However, sand does not retain heat well at all. Sand does not store anything after reflecting heat back into the air. Once the sun sets, there is nothing left to warm the sand. The heat of the day then quickly diminishes, resulting in a cold night."
The translation of "Terakhir, Tanpa Kelembaban" to English is "Finally, Without Humidity".
The desert is classified by its lack of precipitation and therefore has almost zero humidity in the air. The absence of water molecules in the air also contributes to the cold nights in the desert. Unlike sand, water is much better at retaining heat. That is why tropical areas near water do not get so cold.
"With water in the air, the Sahara Desert would not be this far because some of the daytime heat would remain trapped. It also would not be so hot, as high humidity air requires more energy to be heated. However, as it stands, the Sahara heats up and cools down quickly due to the lack of moisture in its air."
