Dream - The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) report revealed the factors that caused the Batik Air pilot and copilot on the Kendari-Jakarta route to fall asleep simultaneously for 28 minutes during the flight on January 25, 2024. As a result, the Airbus A320 aircraft registered as PK-LUV briefly deviated from its course before eventually successfully landing at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Cengkareng.

KNKT revealed that the pilot is 32 years old and the co-pilot is 28 years old. Both of them have professional licenses and are declared qualified as Airbus A320 pilots. Based on their findings, KNKT revealed that fatigue was the cause of the Batik Air pilot and co-pilot falling asleep simultaneously while flying the aircraft.

KNKT found that the copilot told the pilot that he did not get enough rest the night before. The copilot is a new parent, with a pair of one-month-old twins. Although the night before he was scheduled to fly to Kendari, he tried to sleep early, but he had to wake up several times to help his wife take care of the baby and felt that the quality of his sleep decreased.

Several efforts were made to contact the plane, including asking another pilot to call the Batik Air crew. KNKT mentioned that approximately 28 minutes after the copilot fell asleep, the pilot finally woke up and realized that the plane was not on the correct route.

"He woke up his colleague and responded to a call from the Jakarta control center, stating that they were experiencing radio communication issues as the reason for their lack of response. The Batik Air plane eventually landed safely in Jakarta. There was no damage to the plane or injuries to the passengers. After investigation, KNKT investigators did not find any issues with the aircraft's communication system."
