"Dream - Indonesian badminton star Marcus Fernaldi Gideon surprisingly retired from professional badminton at the age of 33. Marcus' decision to withdraw from the international scene was announced directly via his Instagram account on Saturday, March 9, 2024."

"Thank You God for these 33 years! On this day, at the age of 33, I have decided to retire from my professional badminton career," Marcus writes on his account @marcusfernaldig. "It feels like it has been 25 years of non-stop training and competing on the field. I am grateful to Jesus who has worked in my life, without Him, I may not be where I am now," Marcus added.

Marcus also tells about his childhood which was underestimated at school. He was looked down upon because of his small stature compared to his peers.

Marcus began his professional career in pairs with Markis Kido in men's doubles. He also played in mixed doubles with Rizki Amelia Pradipta. In 2015, he was paired with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. Marcus/Kevin became a deadly duo, successfully winning various championships and sealing the world number one ranking.

The best achievement of Marcus and Kevin is being the champion of All England in 2017 and 2018. Unfortunately, a heel bone injury in June 2023 caused his career to decline. Marcus then decided to retire from the arena because he previously also experienced a left heel injury. As a result, Marcus had to be separated from his partner in the men's doubles, Kevin Sanjaya.

After the operation, the champion of the 2018 Asian Games has not yet returned to peak performance and has decided to retire today, Saturday, March 9, 2024.
