Dream - Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) through the National Marine Conservation Area Agency (BKKPN) in Kupang conducted an assessment of coral bleaching phenomenon.
The following is a translation of the text from 'Bahasa' to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "This is a follow-up to the prediction by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef Watch, which mentions the potential increase in sea water temperature in early 2024. This assessment has been carried out gradually and continuously in the Conservation Areas of Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan (Gili Matra), the Banda Sea Conservation Area, and the Sawu Sea National Marine Park, from January to mid-February 2024."
The Director-General of Marine and Coastal Management (Ditjen PKRL) at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Victor Gustaaf Manoppo, explains that the assessment of coral bleaching phenomena needs to be done because coral reefs are highly important ecosystems for marine life and humans. Coral reefs are home to various marine species, provide a food source, coastal protection, and a source of income for coastal communities.
Victor said in his statement quoted on Friday, March 8, 2024.
Meanwhile, the Head of BKKPN Kupang, Imam Fauzi, added that the rapid assessment results show an average level of whitening of hard coral in all forms of coral growth in the Gili Matra Island Conservation Area ranging from less than 25 percent.
However, there are several locations that experience bleaching reaching 50-75 percent or even more than 75 percent, namely Bounty Wreck (West of Gili Meno Island) and Sunset Reef (South of Gili Trawangan Island). The coral bleaching conditions in the Banda Sea Conservation Area, based on rapid assessments conducted at the Lava Flow Site and Banda Miniature, generally indicate a range of less than 25 percent. In this condition, branching corals are still in the pale stage as a result of being exposed to coral bleaching events. In addition, other organisms that also experience bleaching are Anemone and Sponge.
Meanwhile, the rapid assessment of coral bleaching in the Sawu Sea, conducted at Oesina Beach, Lifuleo Village, Kupang Regency, shows that coral bleaching is still very low with an occurrence percentage value of less than 5 percent.

In addition, Victor explained that mitigation is also needed by reducing anthropogenic pressure so that coral can survive and recover naturally. One of the efforts that can be done is by increasing awareness and participation of ecosystem service users in coral reef conservation areas.
