The eel hypothesis states that the anthrozoological phenomenon in Loch Ness, Scotland, can be explained through observations of European eel specimens (Anguilla anguilla) which have large bodies, as these creatures are the most suitable considering morphology, behavior, and environment.
In a new study, Folk Zoology Society researcher Floe Foxon analyzed the data on the distribution of European eel mass in Loch Ness to estimate the likelihood of finding exceptionally large eels there. Loch Ness is a large oligotrophic freshwater lake located along the Great Glen Fault in Scotland.

Since the 1930s, sightings of unidentified creatures in the lake have been a major news story in popular media, but to date, no specimens have been obtained despite various efforts. The authenticity and interpretation of photos and films allegedly depicting unidentified animals in Loch Ness are highly doubtful. In the 20th century, systematic searches using submarines, sector scanning sonar surveys, hydrophones, underwater photography, long-lining ships, and trawls only yielded ambiguous sonar signals, low-quality photos, and unidentified sound recordings.
A study of environmental DNA conducted in the lake in 2018 detected a large amount of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA from eels, thus prompting researchers to suggest the possibility of large-sized eels in the lake. However, a new study conducted by researcher Folk Zoology Society Floe Foxon doubts the eel theory.
Based on research, there is a possibility of about 1 in 50,000 to encounter an eel measuring 1 meter in Loch Ness. This could provide an explanation for some unidentified small creature observations.
Although the theory of the "Belut Hypothesis" is interesting, the chances of finding a very large-sized eel are almost impossible. This weakens the theory that giant eels could be the cause of sightings of large creatures in Loch Ness.
