The magical plant known by the Latin name Silphium, which was previously believed to have been extinct for 2,000 years, has recently been rediscovered in Turkey.
"This plant was once commonly consumed by the people of ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome. Known for its golden flowers, Silphium was once the most sought-after plant in the Mediterranean region, even before the rise of the Athenian and Roman Empires."
"The Wonder of Yellow Flowers Worth as Much as Gold and Silver in Roman Times."
The plant with yellow flowers has a number of benefits. Thousands of years ago, ancient societies processed the flowers of this plant by grinding, burning, sautéing, and boiling them for medicinal purposes, food consumption, and even as a contraceptive. During the reign of Julius Caesar, hundreds of kilograms of this plant were stored alongside gold in the Roman palace. At that time, the value of this plant was equivalent to the value of silver.
"Seven centuries after it was first discovered growing on the island of Cyrenaica in what is now Libya, silphion experienced a loss from the ancient Mediterranean region."
The famous Roman historian, Pliny the Elder, in his work "Natural History," claimed that only one stalk of silphium remained in the first century AD, and that stalk was given to Emperor Nero.
"However, recently, Mahmut Miski, a researcher from Istanbul University, estimated that he has rediscovered this ancient plant. He believes that Ferula Drudeana, which grows on Mount Hasan, is silphion."
"Based on a report from National Geographic, Miski found similarities between silphion and Ferula Drudeana that correspond with ancient botanical texts, as well as images of the plants found on ancient Greek coins."
Miski found that both of these plants have thick branching roots and similar yellow flowers.
Both also have healing benefits. Ferula Drudeana contains anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory compounds, similar to those found in silphion.
The text translated to English while preserving the HTML tags is: "Ferula plants were found in two locations in Turkey, one of which is in a place that was once inhabited by ancient Greek society thousands of years ago. The other location is situated in Cappadocia."
