The following is the translation of the 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags: "The oldest evidence of photosynthesis was found in a collection of microfossils that are 1.75 billion years old. This discovery not only sets a record as the oldest evidence, but also provides valuable insights into the evolution of photosynthesis. "
Emmanuelle Javaux and a team of researchers from the University of Liège in Belgium conducted an analysis of fossils collected from three different locations. The first location, the McDermott Formation in Australia, is approximately 1.75 billion years old, while the other two locations are the Grassy Bay Formation in Canada and the Bllc6 Formation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
From these rocks, researchers succeeded in extracting fossilized cyanobacteria that use photosynthesis to produce energy. Emmanuelle Javaux explained, "They have a very small size, less than one millimeter, so they cannot be seen with the naked eye."
Emmanuelle Javaux and her team take the next step by embedding fossils in resin and cutting them as thin as 60 to 70 nanometers using a diamond knife. The next process involves analyzing the internal structure using an electron microscope.
Referring to the report from New Scientist, researchers found that cyanobacteria originating from Australia and Canada contain thylakoids. Thylakoids are membrane-bound sacs where photosynthesis takes place.
"This is the oldest known thylakoid fossil that we currently know. Previously, the oldest thylakoid fossil was around 550 million years old," said Javaux."
Quoted from Phys, this discovery indicates that photosynthesis has evolved before 1.75 billion years ago. However, there is still one unanswered question, which is when exactly did photosynthesis evolve. Was it before or after the Great Oxidation Event? Further analysis is needed to find out.
