Paleontologists recently discovered fossils of large creatures that reached a height of 24 meters. They have been identified as a new species named Garumbatitan morellensis. What happens next? Here is a summary of the largest dinosaurs on Earth!
Garumbatitan Morellensis is a member of the sauropod subgroup called Somphospondyli, which roamed far and wide throughout the Cretaceous period.
Dinosaur plant-eaters that have four legs, long necks, and crosswise tails. Their existence can be traced back around 122 million years ago in an area now known as Spain. G. morellensis is included in the "primitive" group, scientists say that somphospondylans may have originated from Europe, then spread to Asia, North America, and Africa, as proposed by Harry Baker from Live Science.
During the research at the Sant Antoni de la Vespa fossil site between 2005 and 2008, researchers found vertebrae, leg bones, and shin bones that they believed belonged to at least three separate individuals of G. morellensis. These remains are estimated to originate from the Early Cretaceous period, ranging from 145 to 100.5 million years ago.
Named after its extraordinary size and geographical location, Garumbatitan means "Garumba giant."
This name is inspired by Muela de la Garumba, a mountain peak in the Els Ports region of Spain, which is near the location of the fossil discovery. Meanwhile, the term "Morellensis" refers to the nearest town, Morella.
According to researchers, this dinosaur is likely to have been more than 24 meters long and over 9 meters tall when alive. With such a size, this dinosaur is possibly one of the largest ever to have existed on Earth. Scientists even speculate that this dinosaur may have had the ability to consume around 30-40 kilograms of plants every day.
