Dream - The government targets the use of electric motorcycles in Indonesia to reach 13 million users by 2030. The transition to electric motorcycles is considered important as 40% of air pollution contributors come from motorcycles. Moreover, Indonesia is the third largest country in terms of motorcycle users in the world, making the transition to electric motorcycles important.
Special Staff of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Agus Tjahajana, said the government targets 15.7 million electric motorcycles to enter the Indonesian market in 2030. According to him, the Indonesian society has started to show interest in electric motorcycles. This is marked by a 13-fold increase in the number of electric motorcycles in just two years, from 0% in 2020 to 55% in 2022.
"To support the transition process, said Agus, the government and private parties continue to improve the quality of batteries and combine charging and swapping methods."
Agus acknowledges that the quality of electric motor batteries in Indonesia does not meet the standards. This condition can become a problem, so standardization of electric motor batteries must be carried out. Agus also reveals that swap stations (charging stations) need to be provided in various easily accessible locations.
"With standardization and swap stations, it can be a good step to accelerate the transition of electric motorcycles in Indonesia. To support this, now swap stations can be found by electric motorcycle users without any time limits."
"Swap stations have been installed in front of rolling doors and 24-hour gas stations, going forward we will install them in places that are not closed," said Irwan Tjahaja, CEO & Founder of SWAP Energi."
The other thing done to accelerate the transition to electric motors in Indonesia is battery standardization. With battery standardization, the quality of electric motors in Indonesia can improve. Irwan Tjahaja from SWAP Energi revealed that they produce batteries above 2 kWh which, if short-circuited, will not emit sparks.
In supporting sustainable development, electric motorcycle batteries that are no longer functioning will be recycled using cloud technology and digital twin. This can save natural resources and reduce environmental pollution caused by battery production waste.
To encourage increased public interest and facilitate the use of electric motorcycles, the government is implementing various incentives. These incentives include sales subsidies amounting to Rp 6,998,193,670,000 and a reduction in value-added tax (VAT) from 11% to 1%. The government is also expediting the development of two-wheeler vehicle infrastructure to achieve a target of 13 million electric motorcycle users by 2030.
