Israel-Hamas Agree to Ceasefire for 4 Days

The agreement was reached after negotiations mediated by Qatar on Wednesday, 21 November 2023.

The decision of the ceasefire is reported to have sparked intense debate among ministers in Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu's government. In the end, only three out of 38 cabinet members opposed the ceasefire.

The prime minister's office said, in the agreement, Hamas must release at least 50 women and children during the ceasefire for four days. For every additional 10 hostages released, the ceasefire will be extended by one day, he said, without mentioning the release of Palestinian prisoners as the compensation.

As a reciprocal gesture, Israel will release 150 Palestinian women and children who are being held captive in prisons.

The agreement is the first ceasefire during Israel's aggression in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian officials said at least 14,100 people have been killed.

While the UN says about 1.7 million people have been forced to leave their homes, Hamas has killed at least 1,200 people in its attacks against Israel.
