Chinese archaeologists recently discovered an Austronesian settlement dating back 7,300 years on Pingtan Island, Fujian Province. The term Austronesia refers to a broad group of people inhabiting Southeast Asia, Taiwan, the coastal regions of New Guinea, Melanesia, Polynesia, and Madagascar.
This settlement indicates that the dwelling is inhabited by a community from a civilization that extends from southern China to Southeast Asia. Its main archaeological site, Xiying, is estimated to be between 6,500 and 7,300 years old, displaying ruins of buildings, human bones, stone artifacts, and ceramics.
"Through genetic analysis on the excavated human bone remains, it is revealed that there is a close connection between the inhabitants of this settlement and other groups in the southern regions of China and Southeast Asia."
"According to Zhou Zhenyu, a researcher at the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as quoted from the laprensalatina website."
Additional discoveries at the Keqiutou site, which dates back 5,000 to 6,500 years, along with the Donghuaqiu and Guishan sites, which date back 3,000 to 4,200 years, provide additional evidence of the development of Austronesian civilization on Pingtan Island. They have developed agriculture through slash-and-burn techniques, handicrafts, as well as complex structures, including residential areas and public spaces.
Guan Qiang, Deputy Director of National Cultural Heritage Administration, revealed that this discovery holds great significance in deepening the understanding of the history and culture of Austronesian society. Additionally, this finding provides insights into how Austronesian communities utilize marine resources and spread their influence to various regions of the world.
The maritime journey of the Austronesian people, which lasted for thousands of years and involved long-distance travel, may be one of the earliest and largest sea migrations in human history. The National Cultural Heritage Administration notes that the Austronesian migration began around 6,000 years ago and lasted until about 1,000 years ago. Currently, around 400 million people use approximately 1,200 Austronesian languages around the world.
