Dream - The Malaysian Immigration Department has arrested seven foreign beggars at the Gelang Patah night market. Some of the beggars are able to earn up to RM10,000 or around Rp33 million per month.
Indonesian Citizen's Couple
During a joint operation with the District Social Welfare Department of Johor Baru, officers detained six men and one woman aged between 34 and 63 years old.
According to New Straits Times, the foreign citizens consist of a male and female from Indonesia, three male disabled individuals from Cambodia, and two citizens from Thailand, who have used various methods to gain sympathy from donors.
They claim that the donation will be channeled for charity and to build a tahfiz school. Residents around the night market have long complained about the influx of foreign beggars, which triggered a raid at 6.30 PM.
"Residence Permit"
The following is the translation of the text from 'Bahasa' to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags: "Indonesian citizens (WNI) were arrested after officers inspected a kiosk operating in the market, and the couple could not provide official documents for their stay."
The Director of the Johor Immigration Department, Baharuddin Tahir, stated that the detainees have violated Article 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having a valid permit to stay in Malaysia, and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for violating their ticket conditions.
Director of the Immigration Department of Johor, Baharuddin Tahir, said that the enforcement was carried out following complaints from the public regarding the presence and activities of foreign beggars in the night market.
"The foreign beggar was arrested for exploiting donations for the funding of a non-existent religious school. Some of the arrested foreign beggars are disabled individuals believed to be taking advantage of their condition to gain sympathy from the public."
Clearly Baharuddin.
"The arrest of foreign beggars shows that they are taking advantage of the generosity of the community. Among them, some earn RM300 per day, and RM10,000 per month," he added. Previously in 2018, foreign beggars in the city center of Johor Bahru were reported to be able to earn RM300 or nearly Rp1 million per day, and reach RM10,000 or Rp33 million per month."
