Dream - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States highlights the changes in forest areas in Kalimantan after the Indonesian government initiated the development of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). In the photo shared by NASA, the forests in East Kalimantan still appear clean in 2022. Meanwhile, in the second photo, there are increasingly more patterns formed in February 2024, indicating the growing infrastructure in the forest area.

Translation: "The two images show IKN in April 2022 and February 2024. Both were captured respectively by OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 and OLI on Landsat 8."
As reported by NASA's Earth Observatory, in the 2024 image, a network of roads can be seen built within the forest. The initial phase of IKN construction consists of government facilities and other buildings for an estimated initial population of 500 thousand people.
According to government officials, the construction of a new capital city on the island of Kalimantan is largely due to various environmental challenges faced by Jakarta, the current capital of Indonesia.
Jakarta is inhabited by 30 million people and is rapidly developing, but on the other hand, floods often occur, traffic is congested, air pollution is dangerous, and a shortage of drinking water is becoming common. Jakarta is also sinking. Excessive groundwater extraction has contributed to a rate of land subsidence of up to 15 centimeters per year, and 40% of the city's area is now below sea level.
In 2019, President Jokowi announced that the center of the country's administration will be relocated from the densely populated island of Java to the sparsely populated island of Kalimantan.
Development of a new capital city, called Nusantara (an ancient Javanese term meaning outermost island or archipelago), will begin in July 2022 in forest and palm oil plantation areas.
The project plan stipulates that IKN will become a green metropolitan city that can be traversed on foot, supported by renewable energy, with 75% of the city still being forested. However, some researchers remain concerned that this change in land use may endanger the forests and wildlife in the area.
Although its location has changed significantly over the past year and a half as seen in the NASA satellite footage, the Nusantara city is still far from being completed. The construction is planned to be fully completed by 2045.
