"Limnonectes is a genus of large tongued frogs in the family Dicroglossidae."
This genus includes more than 75 scientifically recognized species. They are collectively known as "toothed frogs" because they tend to have unusually large teeth, which are small or absent in other frogs.
The translation of "Gunakan Taring untuk Bertarung" to English is "Use Fangs to Fight".
"They use their tusks to fight each other for territory and mates, and sometimes even to hunt prey with tough skins like giant millipedes and crabs."
The species Limnonectes is distributed from India to China and Indochina, through the Thai-Malaysia Peninsula, and across the Sundaland (Borneo, Sumatra, and Java), the Moluccas, the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, parts of western New Guinea, and the Philippines. Larger species prefer fast rivers, while smaller ones live among overlapping leaves or along riverbanks.
“Fanged frogs have a very complex reproductive biology,”
words of researcher Field Museum of Natural History Jeffrey Frederick and his colleagues.
“For example, two Malay species, Limnonectes hascheanus and Limnonectes limborgi, exhibit terrestrial eggs guarded by males along with nidicolous larvae that are ontogenetic in nature: the larvae hatch as free-living tadpoles but remain in the nest guarded by the males, and survive solely on nutrients from the yellow yolk sac.”

“Four species of Limnonectes from Kalimantan, Limnonectes kuhlii, Limnonectes blythii, Limnonectes ibanorum, and Limnonectes ingeri ‘are silent’, do not have the vocal ability for advertisement calls.”
The newly described species, named Limnonectes phyllofolia, lives in Sulawesi, a steep mountainous island that is part of Indonesia.

“Sulawesi is a giant island with an extensive network of mountains, volcanoes, lowland rainforests, and cloud forests in the mountains,” said Dr. Frederick. “The existence of these various different habitats means that the magnitude of biodiversity in many of the plants and animals we found there is quite remarkable – rivaling places like the Amazon.” “Limnonectes phyllofolia is small compared to other fang-toothed frogs on the island where it is found, measuring about a quarter,” he added.
“Many frogs in this genus are giant, weighing up to two pounds. On a larger scale, this new species weighs almost the same as loose change.”
The translation of "Jantan yang Rawat Telur-Telur Katak" to English is "The Male that Cares for Frog Eggs."
"Surprisingly to the research team, the Limnonectes phyllofolia individuals that care for the eggs are all male."
“Male frogs guard one or more eggs that cling to leaves or large mossy stones, one to two meters above a slow-flowing small stream, water droplets, or seepage,” they said.
“Behavior like this is not fully known by all frogs, but it is rare.”

"They hypothesize that the unusual reproductive behavior of frogs may also be related to their smaller-than-usual fangs. “Some frog relatives have larger fangs, which help them fend off competition for spots along the river to lay eggs in the water,” they said. “Since these frogs have developed ways to lay eggs far from water, they may no longer need such large fangs.”"
“It is very interesting that in each subsequent expedition to Sulawesi, we still find new and diverse reproductive methods,” Dr. Frederick concluded.
"Our findings also underscore the importance of preserving this very special tropical habitat."
"Sulawesi Unique Animal Discovery Place"
“Most of the animals that live in places like Sulawesi are quite unique, and habitat destruction is a conservation issue that continues to haunt efforts to preserve the species diversity we find there.”
“Mempelajari hewan seperti katak yang tidak ditemukan di tempat lain di bumi membantu kita melindungi ekosistem yang berharga ini.” translates to: “Studying animals like frogs that are not found anywhere else on Earth helps us protect this valuable ecosystem.”
The discovery of Limnonectes phyllofolia was reported in a paper in the PLoS ONE journal.
